England 2023: Camphill community, surfing at 8°C

22/04/2024

Most tourists head to London and other famous places. Our trip to England was a bit different, thanks to my mom who arranged for us to stay in the Camphill community in the middle of the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors National Park - in the village of Botton, where even google can barely see.

The Camphill community has been here since 1955 and people with various types of disabilities, mostly mental, live in families. One of these families was the Czech family with their three children. Three members of the community also lived in the household with them. For them, this village is a safe place where they can live freely and independently, work, create and engage in the activities that are closest to their hearts. The Walfdor School is also part of the village.

The community runs a number of workshops (woodcarving, cheese making, candle making, café, etc.). You can check out the video below to get a better idea of life in this unique community.

On the first day we toured the village and met its inhabitants.

The second day we headed to the coast and drove through Robin Hood's Bay, Whitby and Staithes.

The third day we stayed in the area and did a hiking tour of the national park, the moors, and the falls.

On the fourth day we went to York (Castle Howard, The Eye of York, York Minster) and to the Druid's temple, which is not originally from that era, but I still highly recommend it.

We spent the fifth day in the town of Saltburn by the sea, where I surfed and we went for a walk in the park and around the town.

On the sixth day we went to Scarborough, where we went to the castle, the harbour and the market, but it was closed on Sunday.
